Proanthocyanidins are a class of polyphenolic flavonoids synthesized by the polymerization of different amounts of catechin, epicatechin or gallic acid. They are widely found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, flowers and bark, especially grapes and cranberries.
.Antioxidant effect. Procyanidins can reduce the loss of other antioxidant nutrients, thus reducing the formation of oxidation products, and thus improving the total antioxidant capacity of the whole body.
.Prevention of cardiovascular disease. Proanthocyanidins can reduce serum total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol, improve platelet function and reduce systolic blood pressure in patients with mild hyperlipidemia, thus protecting the cardiovascular system.
.Reduce the risk of certain cancers. Anthocyanin intake has been shown to reduce the risk of colorectal, stomach, endometrial and pancreatic cancers. But the protective effect of procyanidins is no longer shown after the occurrence of cancer.
.Prevention of urinary tract infection. Products containing cranberries, for example, can reduce the incidence of urinary tract infections.
